So you’ve got a holiday coming up and you’re wondering whether you can bring your vape. The short answer is yes — but there are rules, and getting them wrong at the airport is not a fun experience.
The good news is it’s actually pretty straightforward once you know what you’re doing. Let’s walk through it properly.
Can You Take Your Vape on a Plane?
Yes — but with conditions. Vapes and e-cigarettes are allowed on flights, but they come with specific rules about where they can go and how much you can bring. Most of these rules exist because of the lithium batteries inside vaping devices and the flammable nature of e-liquid.
Ignore the rules and you risk having your gear confiscated at security. So it’s worth knowing them before you pack.
The Golden Rule — Vapes Go in Your Hand Luggage Only
This is the most important one. Your vape device, pod kit, mod, or any vaping device with a lithium battery must go in your carry-on bag. Not your checked luggage. Not your hold baggage.
Lithium batteries in the hold are a serious fire risk — they can’t be monitored or accessed mid-flight if something goes wrong. Airlines and aviation authorities are very strict about this. Security will pull it out if they find it in your checked bag and you may lose it entirely.
Device in your hand luggage. Always.
What About E-Liquid?
E-liquid follows the same rules as any other liquid when it comes to airport security.
In your hand luggage — each bottle must be 100ml or under and everything has to fit in a single clear resealable plastic bag no larger than one litre. This is the standard airport liquid rule that applies to everything from shampoo to perfume.
Here’s where TPD regulations actually work in your favour. In the UK, nicotine-containing e-liquids are capped at 10ml bottles by law. So your nic salt bottles are already well within the 100ml limit — no decanting needed.
Larger shortfill bottles? Those need to go in your checked luggage if they’re over 100ml. Just make sure they’re sealed properly to avoid leaks.
How Much Can You Bring?
For devices there’s no strict limit on quantity but customs may ask questions if you’re travelling with an unusual amount. A couple of devices and a reasonable supply of e-liquid for your trip is perfectly fine.
For e-liquid most airlines follow the standard 100ml per container rule in hand luggage. In your hold luggage most airlines allow e-liquids but check your specific airline’s policy before you fly as rules can vary.
Will Your Vape Set Off Security?
It might get looked at but it won’t set off the metal detectors in any dramatic way. Security staff are very familiar with vaping devices now. Just pop your device in the tray like you would your phone and laptop — separate it from your bag and it’ll go through the scanner without any issues.
If you have a box mod or a device that looks unfamiliar, a security officer might ask about it. Just be honest and straightforward — it’s a vape, here it is. They’ve seen it all before.
Can You Vape at the Airport?
Sometimes — but only in designated smoking areas. Most airports have specific outdoor smoking zones or indoor smoking rooms where vaping is permitted alongside smoking.
Vaping inside the main terminal, at your gate, in the toilets, or anywhere outside of a designated area is not allowed and can result in a fine. The rules are the same as smoking — if you wouldn’t light a cigarette there, don’t vape there either.
Some airports are stricter than others. If you’re not sure, ask airport staff or check your specific airport’s website before you travel.
Can You Vape on the Plane?
Absolutely not. No exceptions.
Vaping on a plane — including in the toilets — is illegal and treated the same as smoking. Smoke detectors on planes are extremely sensitive. If you trigger one mid-flight you’re looking at a very serious situation, a potential emergency landing, and significant legal consequences.
Keep your device in your bag for the entire flight. No sneaking a quick vape in the bathroom. It’s just not worth it.
Watch Out for Where You're Flying To
This is genuinely important and a lot of people get caught out by it.
Different countries have very different laws around vaping — and some of them are extremely strict.
Thailand — Vaping is illegal. Possession of a vape device can result in a fine or even imprisonment. This is not an exaggeration. Tourists have been arrested.
Singapore — Vaping is banned and the fines are significant.
UAE (Dubai) — Rules have relaxed in recent years but there are still restrictions on where you can vape and what you can bring in. Always check current rules before travelling.
Australia — Nicotine e-liquid requires a prescription. Bringing it in without one is technically illegal.
Most of Europe — Similar rules to the UK in most cases. TPD regulations apply across EU member states so products you buy in the UK will generally be compliant.
USA — Vaping is legal but rules vary significantly by state. Some states have additional restrictions on flavours and nicotine levels.
Before you travel internationally with your vape — Google the specific rules for your destination. A quick five-minute search could save you a very stressful situation at customs.
Practical Tips Before You Fly
Empty your tank before you board. Changes in air pressure during a flight can cause your tank or pod to leak. An empty tank means no mess in your bag and no nicotine-stained clothes.
Bring more e-liquid than you think you need. Your favourite flavour or brand might not be available at your destination. Especially if you’re travelling somewhere with stricter vaping laws.
Carry your vape in an accessible part of your hand luggage. You’ll need to take it out at security so having it easy to reach saves time and stress.
Check your airline’s specific policy. Most major airlines follow the same basic rules but there can be small differences. A quick check on your airline’s website before you travel takes two minutes and gives you peace of mind.
Bring a charging cable. Obvious but easily forgotten. A dead device on a long trip is a miserable experience.
